Ecology & Native Fauna Management

Ecology and native fauna management are critical for maintaining biodiversity and protecting wildlife populations. Ongoing development in both urban and regional areas for residential housing, infrastructure, mining of natural resources and agriculture can affect the biodiversity of our natural environment and put added pressure on our precious native species through reducing their available habitat. In addition, feral animals can destroy native species habitat and reduce numbers through predation.

Feral cats are dramatically affecting many native species and have been linked to the extinction of 27 native mammals since being introduced. They now threaten a third of our threatened native mammal, frog, bird and reptile species.

Management of these and other conservation related issues requires an understanding of wildlife ecology and the principles of wildlife management.
